Anthony Colciaghi, Principal, and Jamie Hammond, Project Manager, of Francis Cauffman spoke with us about contrasting old and new, working with a historical building and creating a contemporary space without compromising traditional beauty.
Tell me about your client.
Anthony Colciaghi (AJC): Young Conaway Stargatt and Taylor (YCST) has always been a great client of Francis Cauffman. They have the insight to form committees that contain a cross section of generations and thought leaders in the firm. They have always valued great design and understand that design helps their business by helping employees live better. They believe that people are their greatest asset. A project as significant as this requires a strong client commitment to realize its full potential, and YCST has always held up their end of that commitment!
What were some of the challenges working with an existing building?
Jamie Hammond (JHH): Because the building is 100 years old and has had several additions, we faced a number of design challenges in maintaining a consistent plan layout and ceiling heights, as well as meeting modern building code requirements, particularly to atriums and egress. Since the building is encased with concrete and limestone, integrating technologies such as wireless internet and cell phone coverage took special consideration.
