Emergency departments (EDs) are commonly the first point of entry for a hospital, and most importantly, a place for innovations to bring faster service to patients. Using evidence-based design, Francis Cauffman designed a state-of-the-art ED, featuring decentralized nurse stations, windows for natural sunlight (not common in EDs) and color-coded storage cabinets on wheels. At the time, storage cabinets on wheels were a radical departure from centralized storage rooms. The carts promote efficiency because nurses do not have to search for required materials or equipment during an emergency. The design team also worked to expand obsolete departments, namely surgical services, rehabilitation services, and dietary services.
