Institute Hall
Rochester Institute of Technology
Rochester, NY / 78,000 square feet
To further its reputation for outstanding engineering education, the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) added a new chemical and biomedical engineering department. Francis Cauffman’s design for the department’s new building completes RIT’s science quadrangle, forming a meeting ground between different parts of the campus. The multi-use building, called Institute Hall, also holds the chemistry department, wet research labs, a vivarium, and facilities related to the RIT-Rochester General Health System. Institute Hall is a glass building with a glazed core but it is wrapped in a red brick shell to align with the predominantly brick campus buildings. The team is seeking LEED Silver certification or higher.
