Francis Cauffman has been a strategic partner to PinnacleHealth System for 15 years, working with the institution to update and expand its Harrisburg Hospital and design its new Medical Sciences Building. At the Harrisburg Hospital, renovations have included the labor and delivery units, an orthopedics department, a pediatrics unit, the ICU, and the lobby. The design team acquired street frontage and built vertically to enlarge the emergency department, since the hospital did not have the option to expand horizontally. A sophisticated lighting wall, which parallels the curving street, draws attention to the emergency entrance. The Medical Sciences Building consolidates two remote lab locations and is designed for vertical expansion. The design also unifies disparate architectural styles and has become a signature building in the neighborhood.
