St. Michael’s Medical Center, a 143-year-old hospital where patients once arrived by horse and carriage, is growing to meet the needs of its community. The healthcare system reached out to Francis Cauffman to create an extensive update and expansion to its emergency department in order to accommodate increasing patient volumes. The hospital, which grew slowly over time, occupied several buildings with different architectural styles, which created a circulation and wayfinding problem. Francis Cauffman’s design for the renovation corrects this, relocating entrances to improve and streamline patient experiences.
