Geisinger Health: Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Critical Care Building

Healthcare Acute Care Support Services Pennsylvania
The Critical Care Building at Geisinger Wyoming Valley is the second major addition resulting from the master plan developed by FCA. The CCB is core of this campus expansion by providing services which increased the capacity of the hospital. This facility includes an emergency department, a surgery suite with supporting new sterile processing department, a 24-bed ICU, a 24-bed adult acute nursing unit, a new rooftop heliport and connector links to the existing hospital.

The CCB was built to create adjacencies between departments that were related.  It was designed create efficiencies by providing nodes of service so staff could be more productive and allow teamwork environments to develop. Visual access to daylight and views to the valley outdoors was a planning goal.

Despite challenges – such as restrictive sub-surface conditions, a mountainside site, and the need to keep the campus fully operational during construction, it achieved LEED-NC v.2.2 Silver certification, Level II trauma accreditation and the 2010 VISTA Award for New Construction.
