Celebrating all that makes this neighborhood school unique, art and topography take center stage in this school’s design. This renovation/addition project, located in the Beaver Hills/Westville neighborhood of New Haven, consisted of demolishing three previous renovations and adding 63,000 SF to the original 26,000 SF facility built in 1913. The school’s design is an expression of the angles of the surrounding street grid and the significant grade change on the site. We developed creative ways to allow natural light into the addition while meeting the project’s extensive programmatic needs within a constrained urban site.
The building consists of approximately 28 classrooms, special education resource rooms, a science lab, a language lab, a computer lab, a library/media center, a music room, an art studio, and a gymnasium. Also included are teachers’ and parents’ rooms, administrative offices, a health suite, and offices/conference areas for such functions as guidance counselor, social worker, speech pathologist, language assessment, and school psychologist.
