New York University Winthrop Hospital: Core Lab Relocation

Healthcare Clinical Labs New York Metro Area
NYU Winthrop Hospital relocated its primary hospital Laboratory and Pathology Services to an off-campus location. The size of the laboratory is anticipated to be approximately 15,000 SF. This represents a laboratory capable of increased testing volume growth of 20%, until 2029.

The existing pathology laboratory is located in the Main Hospital 3rd floor with a small presence of microbiology on the 2nd floor.  A maximum of 55 employees works in the day shift at the clinical lab. With the relocation, a necessary STAT lab was maintained at the main hospital to provide critical and time-sensitive tests. The project included an increase automation platform for chemistry and Urine-Analysis.

Without the capability to shut down the existing lab operations or transfer to a reference laboratory, the plan included all new laboratory equipment, with fully complete validation prior to occupation and transfer of operations from old to new.

The new location required the construction of all new utilities and HVAC systems to meet the laboratory environment. It also introduced new functional elements, which did exist at the main hospital location, such as courier services for sample transfer and chain of custody tracking.
