The Northwell Healthcare System renovation project included redesigning existing space to create 8 private PICU rooms at Cohen Children’s Medical Center. The rooms were designed with size and capability to accommodate ECMO and other critical care services and technologies, as well as to provide live testing of medical equipment booms for future projects.
Patient and family-centered care is important to the health system. Family spaces were provided within the unit, allowing parents to remain close. The patient’s rooms were also sized to accommodate parents sleeping overnight. The project included all support spaces for the unit, Respiratory Storage, a central nurse station, and decentralized nurse sub-stations. The goal was to deliver critical care in a bright, supportive environment for families and pediatric patients of all ages.
