The Bio-Science Complex at the University of Connecticut represented a new era of collaborative research for its College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The facility was one of the first in the nation to integrate plant and animal experimentation.
The Complex is comprised of three buildings - the Advanced Technology Laboratory and the Agricultural Biotechnology Laboratory and attached Greenhouse. The laboratories provide research environments for plant and animal biochemistry and bioengineering as well as “incubator” labs for new companies. Every element - from laboratories filled with natural light to stairwells placed on the building exteriors - was designed with the idea of nurturing a collaborative environment.
The design is both efficient and flexible for evolving research needs and technological development. Paramount are the “people” spaces designed to nurture interaction between faculty, research staff and students in both formal and casual settings. Small conference rooms, break rooms and kitchen areas combine with office suites to create a community for research groups assembled from different parts of the University.
