Geisinger Wyoming Valley Master Plan and Implementation
Geisinger Health System
Wilkes-Barre, PA / 374,000 square feet
Cited by President Obama as a model for “best practices,” Geisinger Health System needed to expand to meet the medical needs of the growing community surrounding it. Francis Cauffman designed the master plan, which transformed the community medical center to a regional institution. The firm subsequently designed a heart hospital, a state-of-the-art critical care building (CCB), a cancer center addition, and a physician’s office building. The CCB alone increased the campus by 50%, with an expanded 32-bed emergency department, a helipad, 12 high-tech surgical suites, and a 24-bed intensive care unit. Presently, the CCB is also the area’s most modern and technically advanced trauma center, as well as its most sustainable, having achieved LEED Silver certification.
