Blackbird Labs

Science and Technology Maryland
Blackbird Labs BioHub transformed a former warehouse space in Baltimore’s City Garage Science and Technology Center into a vibrant biotechnology incubator that fosters innovation, collaboration, and growth. While highly technical, the BioHub’s design equally emphasizes creating a dynamic environment where scientific discovery and community can thrive side by side.

Inspired by the incubator model, the space was planned to support a diverse mix of startups through adaptable laboratory, office, and collaboration environments. Wet labs, an on-site vivarium, tissue culture suites, microscopy rooms, and shared support spaces are seamlessly integrated with open work areas and communal amenities, creating a highly connected ecosystem that serves up to 120 users.

The design celebrates the former bus depot's industrial character, preserving its soaring 19-foot ceilings, skylights, ribbon windows, exposed ductwork, and structural systems. Polished concrete floors and a restrained palette of raw materials, black accents, and crisp white finishes reinforce the building’s authentic character while creating a modern backdrop for cutting-edge research. Lab suites, offices, and support spaces feature partial-height walls that maintain visual openness, extend natural daylight deep into the floorplate, and enhance connectivity among tenants.

A double-height reception and gathering space forms the BioHub's heart, creating an energetic focal point for tenants and visitors alike. Overlooking this central hub, a mezzanine level provides flexible work and event space, while conference rooms, a shared kitchen, and access to outdoor areas encourage spontaneous interaction and knowledge exchange.

By blending specialized research infrastructure with thoughtful architectural design, Blackbird Labs BioHub creates an environment that is both highly functional and deeply collaborative, supporting the next generation of biotech companies within Baltimore’s growing innovation district.
