The Melchiorre Cancer Center is a 137,000SF, five-story facility that redefines oncology care as the northern hub for RWJBarnabas Health. Developed from a 2018 Campus Master Plan, it aims to transform the cancer journey by delivering compassionate, whole-person-centered care that supports patients and families from screening through survivorship.
Strategically located on the Livingston campus, the center maintains a distinct identity while remaining directly connected to the main medical center. As part of New Jersey’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, it integrates 52 exam rooms and 46 private infusion suites with a wide range of holistic amenities, including a café, a wellness center with yoga and music programs, a teaching kitchen, a wig and prosthetic studio, and a contemplative rooftop terrace.
The interior design emphasizes warmth and comfort, using a soft, monochromatic palette accented by jewel tones, light wood, and extensive glazing to bring in natural light and views of greenery. A two-story patient lounge serves as a central feature, highlighted by full-height windows, an edge-lit Corian wall inspired by local landscapes, and a suspended leaflike art installation. Biophilic elements and custom glass wayfinding panels enhance navigation and provide positive distraction.
Furniture and lighting choices create a residential atmosphere that balances comfort with durability, especially in shared spaces like infusion lounges. Advanced technologies, including radiation oncology equipment and imaging suites, are integrated with calming design features. Overall, the center combines cutting-edge clinical care with emotional and psychosocial support, demonstrating the power of thoughtful design in healthcare delivery.
